Those of us who earn our living helping seniors realize the riches of life by conservatively harvesting the equity trapped in their real estate, are a very blessed lot. We help seniors, to be sure, but in the process we enjoy professional fulfillment beyond description. We believe that the single best way to get what you seek in life is to help others get what they wish. Certainly, structuring the best possible reverse mortgage to meet each senior’s unique needs is vital, but it is just one aspect of our job. Another vital component is the role of a liaison bringing seniors together with those who can help them fully leverage their lives, resources, and dreams. We have relationships with elder law attorneys who can help seniors create living trusts or just help them make wise choices that will fully protect their rights. We can put seniors in touch with financial planners who understand the unique needs of seniors. We work with an accounting firm that has a calling for helping our senior clients successfully manage their financial resources and become better stewards of the money they have worked hard to accumulate. We also know of a group who helps those with very limited resources manage what they do have very carefully. Together, our job is to make whatever years a senior has remaining as enjoyable and worry-free as possible. As the lead trusted advisors of this important group, we are driven to become as knowledgeable and as informed as is possible. While 64 percent of all U.S. adults are aware that reverse mortgages exist (including 86 percent of adults age 62 and over), over half don’t understand how they work, according to a new Harris Interactive Poll. The poll—conducted online between May 8 and 14—sought to measure public opinion of different mortgage products, such as home equity loans, fixed rate loans, and “balloon” loans, and the marketing and advertising tactics used to sell them. Approximately 49 percent of the 2,383 adults who took the survey said they were Very of Somewhat Knowledgeable about reverse mortgages, including 55 percent of males and 43 percent of females. When measured by race, 51 percent of Hispanics responded that they were Very or Somewhat Knowledgeable about reverse mortgages, compared to 50 percent of all African Americans and 49 percent of Caucasians.
